Easy DIY Wood Slice Christmas Tree Sign

If you’re looking for a fun handmade gift idea for a Christmas gift exchange game, this might be you’re answer! This diy wood slice Christmas tree sign makes a great rustic decor touch for the Winter season. Or if you’re in a small space and don’t want an actual Christmas tree, this is a fun idea!

How to make an easy DIY Wood Slice Christmas Tree Sign

Gather the supplies:

• Scrap piece of wood (approximately 11 inches wide x 10 inches tall)
• Wood Stain – Minwax Provincial
• Wood slices
• Paint color of choice (I used Folk art Home Decor Chalk, but acrylic paint would work, too.)
• Hot glue gun
• 1 x 2 inch wood pieces for frame
• Faux greenery for tree topper
• Saw tooth hanger

Stain and paint the wood base

I started the process by staining the wood, letting it dry, and painting on a coat of Adirondack White by FolkArt Home Decor Chalk.

Distress by sanding off some of the paint

Using a fine grit sandpaper, I sanded off some of the paint to reveal the stained wood underneath.

Position on the wood slices to form the shape of a tree

These wood slices were made by my husband, but you can now purchase them ready to use. Once the sign base has dried, arrange the wood slices into the shape of a tree. Attach the slices by using hot glue on the back of each one.

Attach a sawtooth hanger on the back 

While the sign is still relatively flat, I like to turn it over and add a sawtooth hanger so it is easy to hang up on the wall!

Add a “tree topper”

Have fun decorating your tree! I used a few sprigs of faux greenery and berries to add to the top of the tree to give it interest and color.

Frame it 

The sign looks great without a frame, but if you’d like to take it to another level, frame it with some simple 1×2 boards. I stained ours with Provincial Minwax stain so they would be nice and dark. Then position them on all four sides and attach with a pneumatic stapler.

And that’s it! Your rustic Christmas tree sign is all ready to take to that gift exchange – or hang it up on your wall!
