Make this simple DIY wall shelf with 3 hooks using scrap wood and a rustic paint technique. It’s a practical solution for small spaces!
This diy project was born out of necessity. As we plotted and planned how to solve a real life problem in our own small home, we discovered not just 1, but 3 creative ways to use a DIY rustic wall shelf with hooks in small spaces!
*Note: My husband made this diy rustic wall shelf using scrap wood. However, if you’d rather skip the “do it yourself” part and just purchase a rustic farmhouse style wall shelf with hooks, I’ve listed some at the bottom of this post.
3 Creative Ways to Use a DIY Rustic Wall Shelf with Hooks in Small Spaces
First of all, meet our humble DIY rustic wall shelf.
My husband whipped up two of these babies in no time at all. Since we had some pallet boards lying around, he used those ~ so it cost us nearly nothing to make! If you, too would like to make one, here are the details:
How to Make a Rustic Wall Shelf with Hooks
Supplies for DIY rustic wall shelf:
- 2 back board pieces (ours measured a little over 3.5 inches by 13 inches)
- 2 side board pieces (3.5 x 7 inches)
- 1 boards for the top (3.5 x 14.75 inches)
- 1 board for the bottom (3.5 x 14.75 inches)
- 3 mug hooks
- wood stain
- paint
- 2 sawtooth hangers for back
Step by step instructions for this wall shelf with hooks:
1. Lay out boards on a workbench or table, leaving a small gap between the 2 boards in the back. Using a brad nailer, nail the corners at the top and bottom and then the side pieces.
2. Stain or paint to get the desired look you’d like.
3. Screw in the mug hooks placing them the distance apart that you desire.
4. Attach sawtooth hangers on the back to hang on the wall.
3 Creative Ways to Style the Rustic Wall Shelf with Hooks for Small Spaces
This little shelf may be humble, but it sure can be versatile and useful. Here are 3 ideas (with a bonus one at the end!).
1. For the Laundry Room ~ A stylish Norwex Cloth Holder!
This was my dilemma that this rustic shelf solved. I absolutely love the Norwex cleaning system and use Norwex clothes every day. However, I didn’t have a place where I could hang the cloths so they could dry out nicely in between uses.
This shelf solved the problem.
I added in some rustic metal tag holders and labels so that I could keep track of which cloths were which.
This shelf is perched right beside my dryer in my teeny tiny laundry room, and it functions (and looks!) great.
2. In the kitchen for a coffee bar station
Because this shelf is a box, it can function as 2 shelves. In this example, jars of coffee can be handy on one shelf, with pretty decor on the top. The mug hooks are perfect for…well, mugs!
If space was really tight, you could also use the shelf itself for mug storage.
3. In the Entryway
This practical little shelf could also be used in a small entryway to help corral all the necessities of going out and coming in. It could hang beside a coat hook or inside a closet.
A small basket hung with jute string on hooks is a perfect spot to put the mail, another basket could hold keys, and the other mug hook could hold your scarf or pet leash.
4. Bonus! The bathroom
As I typed this out, I remembered I forgot to photograph the 4th idea I had for this shelf! Wouldn’t it be so cute and practical in a bathroom, too? It could be hung beside the sink and hold rolled up facecloths, a small jar of cotton balls, and the mug hooks could hold hand towels.
There you have it! A simple little diy shelf that can work very hard in small spaces!

Rita, your rustic wall shelf is such a cute DIY project! I like all the different ways you showed us for using it, but I think my favorite is with the coffee. It would look right at home hanging over a coffee bar.
Such and adorable shelf! And so many uses! BTW I really need to get those cleaning towels! And maybe someone to clean with them 😉
Love your half and hook idea. Pretty and practical at the same time. And usable in so many areas. I bought a little crate in the dollar section at Target and this may be the perfect way to use it. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
These are super cute and practical as well. Such excellent ideas. I would like one for dog leashes inside my closet.
