Why You’ll Love this Recipe

Of course you could make these snowflake cookies using your favorite rolled sugar cookie recipe. However, this cut out sugar cookies recipe uses a few shortcuts – like purchased sugar cookie dough and canned frosting – making it one of those quick & easy favorite cookie recipes. You can skip all the steps of getting out the electric mixer and large mixing bowl and just get right at rolling and baking cookies!

This recipe would also be a fun Christmas baking craft to do with kids. It only requires few ingredients and kids would have so much fun helping cut out cookies and decorating them.

Instructions for the Frosting

  1. Mix 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar into 1/2 of a container of whipped vanilla icing – or until it becomes the consistency of piping icing. (Thick enough to hold its shape when piped.)
  2. Add in 2 drops blue food coloring and 1 drop of green food coloring.
  3. Once cookies are completely cool, use a piping bag and tip to pipe lines on for snowflakes. Add blue sugar pearls to the center of each snowflake cookie.

Tips & Tricks

  • Sandwich the cookie dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper to roll it out with a rolling pin. It won’t stick at all!
  • Make sure the cookies are completely cool before icing.
  • The consistency of the icing is what makes these sugar cookies pretty. If it is too thin and runny it won’t hold its shape. If that happens, add more powdered sugar. If it is too thick, it will be difficult to pipe out. Thin it out by adding in a little more whipped icing from the can.
  • If you don’t have a piping bags, use a gallon size zip loc bag and cut a tiny bit out of the corner and use it instead of a piping tip. It’s a great option for kids if they are helping with cookie decorating too.

Substitutions

Star cookie cutters can work really well to make snowflake cookies if you don’t have snowflake cookie cutters. Just pipe lines on them like snowflakes and they look like snowflakes!

If you’d rather not bother with piping lines on cookies, spreading on pretty frosting and a sprinkle of blue sugar crystals are pretty too. You can even stir up your own easy frosting if you don’t have canned frosting in your pantry.

Variations

Play around with colors to make your own fun version of snowflake cookies. White icing on white cookies is pretty as well.

Equipment

For these cookies I used snowflake cookie cutters, a plastic disposible piping bag & pastry tip. Along with basic snowflake cookie cutters, there is also a whole variety of “mug hugger” cookie cutters – designed to hang on the side of a mug of coffee or hot chocolate. They are also a fun option.

Storage

The icing piped on these cookies doesn’t harden, making it necessary to store them lying flat and not stacked. I froze mine in a single layer in tightly covered containers. However, another option is to freeze them without icing with parchment paper in between the layers, and then icing them before serving.

Top tip: Don’t Overbake!

For soft and chewy sugar cookies, make sure not to overbake them. Take them out of the oven at the slightest hint of golden brown.
