The Real Homemakers’ Guide to Laundry Stain Removal

Get out those stubborn stains from laundry with these tried and true laundry stain removal tips from real experienced homemakers!

Last month I decided to try a fun activity on my Harbour Breeze Home facebook page.

I put together a list of homemaking tips generated by artificial intelligence, and posted one tip a day asking the ladies over there to give their thoughts on how well artificial intelligence keeps house.

Some tips brought on great discussion! Some of them were laundry tips and I found I was learning all kinds of things about stain removal that I had never heard of.

So, I asked this question, “What are some of your tips for stain remover for clothes? I’ve just heard of a bar of sunlight soap and “Miss Mouth Stain Remover” – both of which I’ve never heard of before! What else am I missing??

What followed was the most epic string of suggestions on stain remover tips that I was blown away. I decided to include some of them here in this blog post in case it is something that is as helpful to you as it is to me!

(Update: I created a handy dandy stain removal guide you can print and hang up in your laundry room!) Just fill out the form below to have it sent your way!

  1. Pour boiling water on berry stains so the boiling water flows through the fabric. It will disappear like magic.
  2. Hairspray for ball point pen stains. (I’ve used this magic trick for ink for years!)
  3. Mixture of sunlight dish soap/ water and ammonia for grease stains – brush on stains with an old toothbrush and let sit 5 minutes before washing. Also recommended for grease stains was Dawn dishsoap, or any kind of dishsoap mixed with sugar.
  4. The most important tip for stains… DO NOT DRY CLOTHES WITH STAINS in the dryer ever… then you can keep working on the stain.
  5. Blood stains — never use hot water as it will set the stain. ALWAYS cold water.
  6. Homemade all-purpose stain remover recipe options:
    • Dawn, peroxide, baking soda in a paste. Leave it on for 60 minutes and wash.
    • Dawn and vinegar.
    • Degreaser ( green kind ) in a spray bottle and borax
  7. Stain removal on the go:One lady stated, “I discovered Wet Ones hand towelettes are marvelous for removing stains on clothing. Always keep them in the car when out & about & also use them in the house. I highly recommend & have to others. Try to use them immediately or shortly after the mishap. They work like magic. The best I have ever used or experienced.”
  8. Dirt (white baseball pants!): Dawn & peroxide or soak in vengeance then use detergent
  9. Toothpaste as a stain remover (I had never heard of this before, so I did a tiny bit of research. I found one article that said it helps remove grass stain, lipstick, and ink.)

Everyone has their own personal preference for stain removal. Some of the preference depends on if a person wants to treat stains as “chemical free” or natural as possible. Other people don’t really care about that aspect.

So, I’m going to list the products that were recommended in that facebook post. Please do your research on all these things.

***DISCLOSURE: I have not tried many of the products listed below, so they don’t come with my “seal of approval”. But, they might be something that you are looking for, so I wanted to list them if they may be of help to you. (Most of the following are stain removers found on Amazon.)
