Why you’ll love this easy hamburger helper recipe
I’m pretty sure actual hamburger helper wasn’t even in existance when I was a little girl – but my Mom made this version of her own on days when she needed to get dinner on the table fast. This recipe is:
- Quick and easy! You can have it done from start to finish in less than 30 minutes.
- Not complicated – This simple homemade hamburger helper only requires a few ingredients – and is so simple to make. In fact, it was the first meal I learned to cook as a teenager all on my own!
- A favorite meal for even picky eaters – I had one boy who was particularly fussy about meals. This one always made him so happy, and he even still loves it as an adult now!

Step by step Instructions for Homemade Hamburger Helper
- Fill a large pot 2/3 of the way full with hot water and salt it generously. If you like exact measurements, use 4 cups water with 1 tablespoon of salt sprinkled in. Put a lid on it, set the burner on high temperature and wait for it to boil.
- While the water is heating up to boil (to cook the pasta in), brown the hamburger and onion together in a large skillet. Salt and pepper to taste. Once the hamburger is totally brown and no pink is showing, and the onions are transluscent, remove from the burner and drain off any access grease.
- Meanwhile, once the water boils, pour in the dried pasta and cook according to the package directions for the amount of time for “al dente” pasta. Drain the cooked pasta using a strainer or colendar.
- Once the pasta is cooked, pour the pasta, cream of mushroom soup, and drained corn into the skillet with the browned ground beef mixture. Stir to combine.
- Place back on the burner over medium heat, stirring constantly for a few minutes to heat everything up together and combine the flavors.
What do you serve with Homemade Hamburger Helper
If you want to make this more like a stroganaff dish, you can stir in a little sour cream if you’d like. We, however, liked ours with just a drizzle of ketchup. (Yes, we’re definitely a ketchup family!)
Here are some side dishes that go well with homemade hamburger helper:
- Slices of bread and butter – or bread machine dinner rolls
- Orange fluff salad
- Any kind of green salad would be yummy with this skillet recipe. We love spinach salad with this creamy poppy seed dressing recipe.
Other easy ground beef recipes
- This meatloaf recipe is always a hit.
- Oven baked hamburger steaks
- My Mom’s old fashioned sloppy joes recipe is the BEST!
- This biscuit cheeseburger casserole was also a favorite of our kids.
