Pratical Travel Utensil Sets (You can put in your purse!)

Just hours after I ate a bowl of takeout chili with a disposible spoon made of cardboard, I started to search for more pleasant alternatives. Here are some practical and beautiful travel utensil solutions you might want to pack in your purse or car to help make mealtime away from home more pleasant on your taste buds and lips!

Have you experienced the new eco-friendly style of disposible spoons?

Last week it was our absolute joy and pleasure to have my sister from Montana visiting us up here in our Canadian home.

As we travelled around seeing the sites, we stopped frequently to sample some of the fun treats in our nearby restaurants and snack shops.

In the course of a few days, I discovered a whole new range of bio-degradable and recylcable alternatives to plastic utensils including:

  • A spoon for ice cream that was made out of popsicle stick wood (or is it cardboard?). Whatever it’s made of, it tasted like I was licking my delicious peanut butter chocolate ice cream (pictured above) off a wooden picnic table. What a shame.
  • The drinks on our beautiful ferry ride were served with a paper straw – you know, the cardboard type that disintegrates on your lips as you’re trying to sip out the slushie…
  • A hot coffee cup lid made out of cardboard! (Oh, it tasted terrible! – The lid, that is. The coffee was delicious.)
  • And the straw that broke the proverbial camels back? Last night we ate chili – CHILI! – with a cardboard spoon. I commented on Instagram that it felt like I was eating dinner with an Amazon box!

My Instagram messages lit up with comments from a mix of people who had never experienced the cardboard spoon situation (and didn’t want to!), and those who had and had already gotten prepared so they could avoid it in the future.

Here’s what I learned.

Creative ways to take travel utensils on the go

My Instagram ladies quickly confirmed that there’s wisdom in travelling prepared in the utensil department these days. Just like we now have a stack of reusable shopping bags in the trunk of our car (since plastic bags aren’t even at option at our stores now), it’s time to think about utensils, too.

Here are some ideas to take travel utensils on the go:

  • If you’re crafty, you can sew a roll up utensil holder and fill with utensils to put in the glove box of your car. You can buy them ready made, too. Here’s an option.
  • One lady says her husband stocks his pickup truck with stacks of plastic spoons and forks. (An idea if you can still purchase them where you live.)
  • Since I’m not always in the car when I need a travel sized utensil, I like the idea of a fold up utensil that I can tuck in my purse. Here’s the foldup spoon I’d like to try.
  • Lots of travel utensil sets come in handy dandy cases. I love that. Here’s a travel utensil set with case that I like.

The one downside to travel utensils is that you’ll have to remember to wash them in between uses. You might need to find a restroom to rinse them off in before you can get home to wash them in soapy water. But, other than that detail, I think travel utensils are a fantastic idea.

Did you know you can get foldable/ collapsible stainless steel straws?

Years ago, I was given a collapsible stainless steel straw with a carry case as a gift. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken that out and used it in the last few weeks. It’s absolutely genius – and feels like a glorious luxury when all your friends are sitting around sucking soft drinks and slushies out of disintegrating paper straws. Here are some collapsible straws similar to what I have. Mine fits very nicely into the pocket of my purse right next to a little bottle of hand sanitizer.

Travel Utensil Sets & Collapsible Straws – perfect alternatives to disposible spoons (that are cardboard!)

I’ve searched online to find some nice travel utensil sets and collapsible straws and found them in a variety of places. I’ll link some below. I’ve not ordered any of these specific ones yet, so check out the reviews and purchase from places you trust.

Alternatives to cardboard spoons and straws found on Amazon

If you are a fan of the convenience of shopping on Amazon and like to order from there, here are some options for travel utensil sets and straws found there. You might want to add one on to your next order.

Although there are travel set options that are plastic, I chose the stainless steel options, as I find they are so much nicer to eat & drink with!
