Discover heartwarming beginner embroidery kits that make it easy to start stitching beautiful projects you’ll treasure for years to come.
A Quilt Stitched with Memories
When I was growing up, I loved to watch the women of my family sit in their chairs doing handwork. My grandma was an amazing crocheter, and my Aunt Lois busied her hands with embroidery and cross stitch. She would order quilt-top kits from a mail-order catalog (remember those?), carefully choosing the patterns she wanted to stitch.
Once Aunt Lois finished her quilt top masterpiece, my mom would set up a giant quilting frame—the old-fashioned kind – in our farmhouse dining room. She would invite her friends over for a quilting bee, but the majority of the stitching was done by Mom’s own hands. I’m so thankful that I was given one of those special quilts, embroidered by my aunt and quilted by my mom, with hours and hours of love poured into it.
For years, I’ve kept that quilt carefully folded on a shelf in our townhouse’s storage closet (which happened to be in the bathroom – of all places!). I thought I was saving it carefully. But one day, I pulled it out and discovered a water stain creeping across the fabric. My heart sank.
That was the day I realized 2 things:
- I should NEVER store precious linens in that closet anymore! And,
- I wanted to USE the quilt, not just hide it away!
I tried all my nifty stain remover tricks (and got most of the stain out) and have started using it for our guest bed. Now, every time I pull it out, I smile at the pink vines embroidered across the quilt top, and the tiny hand quilting stitches -as beautiful on the back as the front.
I should NEVER store precious linens in that closet anymore! And,
That quilt isn’t just fabric and thread. It’s a memory stitched into every inch and a reminder of the love and patience poured into handmade things by some ladies I loved dearly. It’s so much fun to take it out and actually USE it!!
Why Handmade Still Matters
Lately, I’ve noticed that handcrafts like embroidery, crochet, and knitting are making a big comeback. Maybe it’s because we crave something that slows us down, or maybe we long for a creative outlet that produces something tangible and beautiful. Whatever the reason, embroidery is the perfect place to start—it’s simple, relaxing, and incredibly rewarding.
