Why bother with a pretty Christmas tablescape idea?

Last week we had the opportunity to visit some friends out of town. They graciously invited us to come in time for dinner – which we did.

When we arrived and stepped into the kitchen and dining area, I was struck with how cozy and welcoming it felt.

Soft music was playing, lamps with cozy lighting were on, a tray of appetizers awaited us on the table, and a tray of pretty glasses was all ready for a special drink (orange juice + tonic water) to be poured.

Once we enjoyed our little plates of appetizers, we moved into the formal dining room for dinner.

The whole experience struck me as a perfect example of what hospitality can do to bless someone’s heart.

A pretty set table added to the enjoyment and pleasure of the evening, and made us feel so special and cared for.

So as we set out the next day for a little vacation, I decided to look for some things to create a pretty tablescape for Christmas – and all Winter long!

Being blessed with the gift of someone else’s hospitality lit a fire in my heart and inspired me to want to open my doors and invite some people over, too!

How do you make a Christmas tablescape?

I’m sure there’s really no wrong way to create a pretty tablescape, but I think of these elements as the basics:

  • A tablecloth (If your table is worn and battered like ours is!)
  • table runner
  • placemats (optional)
  • charger plates (optional)
  • napkins
  • napkin rings
  • a centerpiece
2 taper candles with a green velvet tree in between to make a centerpiece for a Christmas tablescape

Start with something you love and build a coordinating Christmas tablescape look with it.

I was actually overwhelmed with the choices I found, so I decided to just pick one thing I loved and build from it.

In this case, it was a green plaid table runner. Then I added the napkin rings, napkins, and a centerpiece idea.

The exact items from this table setting aren’t available online, but I put together a similar set in my Amazon Shop here.

Create a system that makes it as simple as possible to host guests

Since our home is small, I decided to simplify both my decor and hosting supplies by using the pieces for the table setting in my dining room decor! You’ll notice the napkins and rings are all ready in a little basket on top of the charger plates, and the centerpiece candles are on the top shelf!

I figured it will make it easier when it’s time to set the table for guests if everything is easy to reach and get at!
