The Carolyn Ingalls Christmas Tree
I finally understand the appeal of fake Christmas trees.
Last year we had the whole fall-down-in-the-middle-of-the-night-and-cause-a-mini-flood debacle.
Yesterday, I realized to my horror that our plastic Christmas tree stand had a slow leak. Oh, no. Once again 4 liters of water slowly seeped into our laminate flooring.
I’m not sure our floor can handle another real Christmas tree…
Faulty stands and falling trees aside, I still love our real little Christmas tree perched in the corner of our living room.
I set out this year to make an all-white, rustic, and natural tree. I wanted it to have a bit of an old-fashioned and homespun feel ~ like something they would have had back in the Little House on the Prairie days.
I made a ruffled garland, book page stars and a burlap and flour sack star topper. I added in a few fabric bird ornaments and silver balls.
Shopping with a friend the other day, I discovered a bag of wooden pears on clearance from Fall decor. With just a little string tied to the stems, they became a fun addition.
I also discovered this darling jute flower ornament. {Hmm…I wonder how they make those??}
Although I love houses all decked out in Christmas finery, I find I like to keep ours quite simple. Garlands and lights hanging from every doorway start to make me feel claustrophobic. And, since we want to enjoy our time with extra guests over the Christmas season, I don’t want the house feeling cramped and closed in from an over-abundance of do-dads. So, I think for this year, the Christmas decor is finished.

OH, oh, oh… Rita, I know how the jute flower ornaments are made!!! (at least I think I do… we did something like it a while back.) My husband just got home from being gone for the past week and we still have packages/cards to address and mail plus baking for the Christmas program at church tomorrow. So can you give me a day or two and I will give it a try to make sure I’m correct? I promise I will have them done by very early in the week… Thanks!!
