Ingredients you’ll need for this pizza with Italian sausage
- Pizza Dough – Use whatever kind is your favorite. You can make homemade dough in your bread machine (just look in the bread machine’s recipe book for a recipe), from scratch, pre-made from the store, or raw pizza dough purchased from a local bakery.
- Pesto sauce – Of course you could make it from scratch if you choose, but I never have. Classico brand pesto sauce tastes amazing. I just use it.
- Italian sausage – Italian sausage for pizza can be mild or spicy. We find either tastes amazing on this pizza. Choose whatever your family prefers.
- Caramelized onion – These deliciously slightly sweet and tender onions taste amazing with this italian sausage pizza.
- Sauted mushrooms
- Diced sundried tomatoes (I buy sundried tomatoes in a jar with olive oil. One jar goes a long way!)
- Mozzerella Cheese -Or use whatever kind of cheese you happen to have in the house. Parmesan is also very delicious on this pizza.
Step by Step Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Lightly grease a stoneware pizza pan and press dough down until it covers the bottom of the pan.
- Prepare the toppings as follows:
Italian Sausage: Remove casings from Italian Sausages and brown in a skillet, breaking it up as it cooks with the back of a spatula flipper.
Caramelized onion: Thinly slice a small onion. Melt about 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan and add the sliced onion. Stir and cook until the onions start to get a little soft. Add in 1/4 cup brown sugar. Stir. Turn down the heat to low, and cover with a lid. Simmer for about 5 minutes or until onions are soft and lightly brown. If they start to cook dry, add in more butter.
Mushrooms: Wash mushrooms and wipe off with a paper towel to clean them well. Slice. Saute in about 2 Tablespoons of butter until soft and cooked thoroughly. Salt and pepper to taste.
Sundried Tomatoes: Dice with a knife.
Cheese: Grate.
Once the toppings are prepared, assemble the pizza in the follow layers:
Layer 1: Pesto Sauce
Layer 2: Caramilzed onions
Layer 3: Italian Sausage
Layer 4: Sauted Mushrooms
Layer 5: Sundried Tomatoes
Layer 6: Grated Cheese
Customize your own toppings for this Italian Sausage Pizza
Although I tried to put amounts in my recipe card below, when it comes to making pizza, it’s totally ok to break the rules! Add more or less of the ingredients to fit your personal taste.
Bake at 425 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
To check to see if the pizza is totally cooked through, I gently lift up an edge and peek to see the underside of the crust. If it is slightly golden brown, then it is done.
Slice with a pizza wheel and serve.
Delicious!!
How this Italian Sausage Pizza became our family favorite
The first time I ever tried this pizza recipe was at a Pampered Chef home party. Remember those? The Pampered Chef consultant came to my home and assembled this pizza and baked it for a whole room full of my friends.
I remember thinking it was the best pizza I ever had in my life!
I started making it for my family, and the boys even requested it more than once for their special birthday dinners.
And, yes, I fell in love with stoneware at that Pampered Chef party!;)
I still am using the pizza pans I bought way back then!
