Creating a Cozy Christmas in Every Season of Life

If you’re new here today – welcome! Today’s post is a part of a week long series here. We’re talking all things Christmas and have so far covered choosing a Christmas tree. Once the Christmas tree is chosen and you’re ready to deck those halls, sometimes all the decor options can be so overwhelming!

I’ve found it helpful to first start with a general Christmas color scheme. It’s a great place to start the decision making process. You can mix & match then – using pieces you already have and maybe add just a few things for a little freshness.

Overwhelmed by all the Christmas color scheme options?

Weā€™ve all been there: standing in the holiday decor aisle, completely overwhelmed by the aisles and aisles options. Where in the world do you start??! I put on my thinking cap and tried to come up with some practical tips for how to blend our faithful old favorites with this year’s currently available items for a Christmas look that feels both fresh & cozy.

Tips for choosing a Christmas color scheme

  • Take Stock of Your Existing Decor (that you love): Take a look at the colors already in your home. They will help guide you as you start to make choices. For example, although I love the look of aqua blue and red for Christmas (you can see it in our Christmas house tour here), after using it one year, I realized I prefer a more neutral palatte in this home.
  • Start with decor items you own that could be used all Winter long, and add some traditional Christmas colors to it: Instead of thinking everything in your house has to be Christmas red and green, just adding some Christmas color or Christmas themed items to neutral decor instantly makes it feel more “holiday-ish”.

For example, here are some items I recently saw on a trip to Target in the US. I’m imagining these things on the living room couch and the coffee table in front of it. The items that are green can be used all Winter long – as well as the vase and faux greenery.: (Items can be purchased at Target. They are affiliate links.)

  • Mix & match prints and textures: Linens, fabrics, and ribbons are a fun way to add interest into your Christmas color scheme. Browse magazine pictures, Pinterest, or stores to find something that feels fun and festive to you and build a color decor palette with that. Below is a sample of a Christmas table settings – mixing a plaid table runner and napkins with basic white plates and red accents.
  • Incorporate Christmas decor from your past with natural elements for a fun & festive look. Last year I had fun doing bedroom Christmas decorations. It didn’t take long to put together and was such a fun and cozy space for the dark days of Winter. If you like to decorate with real Christmas boughs, pine cones, and natural elements, check out this interview I did with a friend on nature Christmas decorations.
  • Try a Monochromatic look – Last year I decided to try neutral Christmas tree decor with a mix of creams, browns, & wood tones. With the white twinkling lights, I just loved how it looked in our Dining room. (It’s pictured at the top of this post.) Below are some similar items found in my Amazon shop.
  • Add special lighting to any color scheme to add a festive feeling to a space. Twinkle lights & candles are something that can be added to any color scheme to give a nice warm glow for the holiday season. They mimick the feel of sparkly gold and snow glittering in the moonlight – which are perfect colors for Christmas!

What Christmas Color Scheme are you decorating with this Christmas?

I would love to hear what you’re using for your Christmas color scheme this year. When I was a little girl, I always loved that my Aunt Violet decorated her Christmas tree with a different theme and colors every year. She has now gone to glory, but I’m anticipating your answers just like I used to anticipate going to Aunt Vi’s for Christmas dinner!

I love having a “peak” into your Christmas homes, too. Thanks in advance for sharing with us!
