Baked meatballs with homemade barbecue meatballs sauce.

I was introduced to this recipe from my high school friend’s mom, who was an amazing cook, and it’s been a go-to for family dinners ever since. My kids have always loved it, and it’s one of those recipes that feels like comfort food at our house.

What I love most about this sauce is its flexibility. It’s made with simple pantry staples—brown sugar, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and chili powder—but it can be used in different ways depending on how thick you want the sauce. Plus, if you have frozen meatballs on hand, you can whip up an easy dinner in no time!

Why You’ll Love This Barbecue Meatballs Sauce Recipe

  • Perfect for quick meals – Just pour the sauce over frozen meatballs and bake!
  • Versatile serving options – Enjoy barbecue meatballs with your favorite side like mashed potatoes or rice, in a meatball sub, or serve at a party as an appetizer.
  • Three ways to prepare it – Bake all together, bake separately, or mix at the end to make this recipe work for any occasion.
  • Customizable portions – Easily adjust for two people or a larger family.

Ingredients for Homemade Barbecue Meatballs Sauce

For exact measurements and instructions, check out the full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Frozen Meatballs – You can use homemade meatballs from my freeze-ahead meatball recipe or grab a bag of uncooked or pre-cooked frozen meatballs from the store for a quick and easy meal.
  • Brown Sugar – Adds a deep caramel-like sweetness that balances the tanginess of the sauce.
  • Ketchup – The base of the barbecue sauce, giving it a rich tomato flavor with a hint of sweetness. Ketchup is an important ingredient to my family and the one thing that name brands matter (they tell me!). We use only Heinz!
  • Water – Helps thin out the sauce to the desired consistency.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – A key ingredient for that classic savory, umami barbecue flavor.
  • Vinegar – Adds just the right amount of tanginess to balance the sweet and savory flavors.
  • Chili Powder – Brings a little warmth and mild spice to round out the sauce’s flavor.
This barbecue meatball sauce can be used a variety of ways.

How to Portion, Cook, and Freeze This Recipe to Fit Your Lifestyle

This recipe is so very flexible. You can use this sauce to make barbecue meatballs as a main dish, sandwich filler, or appetizer. Here are some different options you can choose from to make it work for you:

  • Cooking for Two? Portion out the number of meatballs you need for the two of you by choosing how many meatballs you each eat. Use a small baking dish (I used my favorite 6.5 x 10-inch pan) and scale the sauce accordingly.
  • Cooking Options:
    1. Thin Sauce Method: Place frozen uncooked meatballs in a baking dish, pour the sauce over, cover, and bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until hot and bubbly.
    2. Thick Sauce Method: Bake the meatballs first until browned, mix the sauce separately, then pour over the meatballs and return to the oven uncovered until heated through.
    3. Quick Stovetop Method: Bake the meatballs fully, heat the sauce separately, then combine just before serving. This gives you the most control over how much sauce you use (great for appetizers with toothpicks!).

Helpful Tips When Making This Recipe

  • For a spicier kick, increase the chili powder or add a dash of hot sauce.
  • You can make the sauce thinner or thicker by adjusting the amount of water you put in.
  • If the meatballs bake up with a lot of grease and juice, drain that off before topping with the sauce.
You can prebake frozen meatballs before adding the sauce so the sauce remains thick.

Grandma Rita’s Kitchen Tips

One of the best parts of cooking is discovering little tricks that make life easier. When making these meatballs for this post, I browned the meatballs first because it makes the sauce thicker. But most nights? I just dump everything in the pan and let the oven do the work! Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated—just do what’s practical for you!
