Why You’ll Love this Bacon in the Oven Recipe

If you’ve been around here for a while, you may already know that I worked for 2 years as head chef and food services manager for a year round retreat center and camp. We cooked for 30-250 people almost every day of the year!

I learned so many cooking tips and tricks from that job that I’ve brought home to my own home kitchen. One of them is this method for cooking bacon in the oven. It is what we did when we needed to cook bacon for 250 people and have it ready by 8:30 in the morning!;)

Here are some reasons you’ll like making bacon in the oven, too:

  • It turns out crispy, and the method is splatter free! No stinging burns on your hands from jumping grease with this.
  • Lining the baking pan with parchment paper makes clean up easy and helps to avoid scraping off nasty cooked on bacon grease .
  • It’s one of those never fail recipes! After doing this baking bacon method for hundreds of times (literally!), I can say it really does work!
  • You can cook a whole package of bacon all at once – making it perfect for if you need to feed a crowd.
  • If there are just two of you at home (like us now), you can cook a whole package of bacon at the beginning of the week and refrigerate the leftovers. When you want to have bacon again, you just simply heat it up in the fry pan with your eggs. It’s a great time saver.

My husband is the breakfast maker in our family, so I snapped some pictures when he baked up some bacon the other day.

Ingredients and supplies you'll need for how to cook bacon in the oven

What you’ll need for this bacon in the oven recipe:

  • Bacon – whatever is your favorite kind. (Except, I don’t recommend turkey bacon for this recipe. I’ll talk more about that in the frequently asked questions section.)
  • Parchment Paper
  • A large baking sheet with a lip to collect the grease.

Step by Step Instructions for how to cook bacon in the oven:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  1. Line the baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper and lay out the bacon strips so they are just barely touching each other.

  1. Once they are all laid out, place them in the hot oven and set the timer for 8 minutes.

  1. At the 7 minute mark, the bacon should be shrunken down and the grease collecting in the bottom of the pan. We like to flip the bacon at that point and pour off some of the excess grease into a can. (Be VERY careful pouring off grease, as it is very hot. If pouring it from the pan feels too cumbersome and dangerous, you can use a spoon and take off some of the excess.) Most recipes you’ll find online do not talk about draining grease off bacon as it cooks. If you like really juicy bacon, you certainly don’t have to do this step! We have found that we personally like less greasy bacon, so this eliminates the pool of grease in the bottom of the pan, and crispier bacon results!
  2. Place back into the oven and set the timer for 8 more minutes. When the timer dings, check on the bacon and check if it is your preferred amount of crispiness. If you want it crispier than it is, put it back in the oven for a few minutes.

I found that the baking time can fluctuate a bit based on the type and thickness of the specific bacon you purchase. Thicker and thick cut bacon will take longer to become crispy, so it will require more time in the oven.

FAQs about this bacon in the oven recipe and method

Baking times can vary based on the thickness and type of bacon used. However, a general rule is that it takes about 15-25 minutes before it starts to become crispy.

Yes, it is! It does have it’s limitations, though. Check out this detailed post for how to safely use parchment paper for baking.

You can use aluminum foil as an alternate to parchment paper to line the pan when you are cooking bacon in the oven. The purpose of both the parchment paper and aluminum foil is just to help with clean up, so you can choose whichever type you prefer – or none at all!

Some people choose to put an oven safe rack in the pan and place the bacon on top of it before baking bacon in the oven. The idea is that the bacon is elevated and the grease will drip into the pan below. I’ve never used this method, but don’t think it’s necessary to still acheive delicious, crispy bacon. And, it just creates more dishes to wash!;)
