I’ve personally never been much of a fan of traditional stew made with stew meat — it’s just not really my thing. But this quick and easy hamburger stew is one my mom used to make, and it’s one she showed me after we were first married.

She made it one time when she came to visit, and I still remember pulling it out of the oven with her standing in the kitchen with me. It uses ground beef instead of stew meat and relies on simple, everyday ingredients — a few potatoes, carrots, onions (if your family likes them), and a can of tomato soup.

It’s incredibly easy to make, and whether you slow cook it in the crockpot or bake it in the oven, it makes the house smell cozy and comforting all day long. This is one of those perfect comfort food meals for cold days, and we love to serve it with fresh buttered sourdough or whatever bread we have on hand. I really think you’re going to love it.

How to Make Crockpot Hamburger Stew

  1. Brown together the hamburger & onion until the hamburger is no longer pink. Season with salt and pepper while cooking.
  2. Peel and cube the potatoes and carrots.
  3. Layer the hambuger in the bottom of the crock pot followed by the potatoes & carrots.
  4. Pour over the can of tomato soup and then fill up the soup can with water and pour it over, too. (My mom always taught me to use the water to help get out every bit of soup from the can!)
