Why it’s so confusing to convert Cool Whip ounces to liter
I’m no expert in converting metric to imperial measurements, and as I googled and googled “8 ounces to liter” the results of the conversion just didn’t make sense!
The problems arise when you realize ounces are measured by weight or liquid (fluid ounces). In the case of Cool Whip, the ounces are measured by weight. However, liters are a liquid measurement, making Cool Whip sizes extra tricky to convert.
Eventually, I realized the best way to convert Cool Whip container sizes is by converting it into cups!

Cool Whip Container Sizes in Cups – US & Canada
After much searching, I discovered the most accurate way to convert ounces to liters for Cool Whip is to convert it to cups.
To measure Cool Whip by cup easily and accurately, I let it thaw to room temperature first and use a silicone spatula to press it into a measuring cup.

How Long Does Cool Whip Last in the Fridge and Freezer?
Cool Whip is a convenient whipped topping product, but it’s good to keep in mind the best ways to use it.
- Refrigerator: Once thawed, Cool Whip stays fresh in the fridge for about 1–2 weeks. Be sure to keep it tightly sealed to prevent it from absorbing odors or drying out.
- Freezer: Unopened Cool Whip can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. Freezing extends its shelf life significantly, making it a great option for stocking up during sales.
If you’re unsure whether your Cool Whip is still good, check for signs of spoilage, like an off smell, separation, or an unusual texture.
How do I Thaw Cool Whip Properly for the Best Texture?
Thawing Cool Whip the right way ensures it stays light and fluffy without becoming runny or grainy.
- Best Method (Fridge Thawing): Move the container from the freezer to the fridge and let it thaw overnight (6–8 hours). This slow thawing process keeps its texture intact.
- Quick Thaw Method: If you need it faster, you can leave it at room temperature for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. However, avoid letting it sit out too long, as it can become too soft or even melt.
- What Not to Do:
- Don’t microwave it—even on a low setting, microwaving can cause the texture to break down.
- Don’t stir it vigorously—gentle folding helps maintain its airy consistency.
Can Cool Whip be Refrozen After Thawing?
Yes, you can refreeze Cool Whip after it has been thawed, but the texture may change slightly.
- If you refreeze it only once, it should remain fairly stable. However, repeated thawing and refreezing can cause it to become grainy or watery.
- To avoid unnecessary refreezing, consider dividing Cool Whip into smaller portions before freezing so you can thaw only what you need.
Recipes That Use Cool Whip

The confusion between ounces (a weight measurement) and liters (a volume measurement) is understandable, especially since Cool Whip is measured by weight, not volume. The suggestion to convert the sizes into cups is practical and user-friendly, as it simplifies the process of measurement. The printable conversion chart is a helpful resource, reminiscent of classic kitchen tools like those my grandma used to keep handy. Overall, this guide is a thoughtful solution for anyone struggling with these conversions in their recipes.
Thanks a lot for this. Can we store whip cream dispenser in the fridge? How long till the whipped cream in it last?
Thank you for the information. Now, how many tablespoons per container?
There are 16 tablespoons in a cup.
I don’t think this works because the density of cool whip is not 1:1 like water. I just weighed my cool whip, a 1 L tub of it, and not including the tub itself, it was 9.9 oz. The cool whip plus plastic tub weighs 11.45 oz
actually nvm, I didn’t read properly, sorry. This is accurate
Thank you so much! This is extremely helpful.
