Game-Changing Products to Add Volume to Fine Hair

Ladies, if you’re like me and noticing your hair becoming thinner and more fragile as you age, this post is for you! Embracing our journey means adapting and finding the best solutions to enhance our natural beauty. Today, I’m sharing with you some incredible products I’ve discovered that will make your fine hair look and feel fuller, shinier, and healthier. (At least I sure love them for my fine hair!)

Understanding and Embracing Fine Hair

Let’s talk about fine hair, shall we? I’ve discovered that as we age, our hair may start to thin out. However, that doesn’t have to be the end of the world! Once we embrace our new reality, we can make the most of our fine locks by using the best products specifically designed for our hair type.

When it comes to caring for thinning hair, it’s helpful to understand its unique challenges. With the right products and regimen, you can maintain healthy hair that looks voluminous and radiant. In my search for those “perfect” products, I find I’m looking for products that add volume and hold – without weighing it down too much and making it flat!

Looking for and finding hair products for fine hair is sort of like finding the perfect shade of lipstick. Once you find it, it suddenly is no longer in stock!

I’ve tried many things, but here are the ones I’m currently using that are still available for purchase.

Nourishing and Strengthening Your Fine Hair

My hairdresser has encouraged me to is to focus on nourishing and strengthening your strands from the inside out- as well as styling products to help acheive the specific style you have. Let’s dive into the best products that will help you achieve just that.

  1. Gentle Shampoo: Start your hair care routine with a gentle shampoo specifically formulated for fine hair. Look for products that are sulfate-free and contain nourishing ingredients like biotin, keratin, and panthenol. These ingredients will help promote hair growth and strengthen your fragile strands. I use Aveda Nurturing Shampoo. It’s not cheap, but I bought the big container set and it lasts a long time.
  2. Lightweight Conditioner: Follow up your shampoo with a lightweight conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down. Avoid heavy, conditioners as they tend to flatten fine hair. I use the Aveda Nurturing Conditioner. Again, it’s not cheap, but if you buy it in the large shampoo and conditioner set, it lasts a long time!

Styling and Finishing Tips for Fine Hair

Now that we’ve nourished and strengthened our fine hair, let’s move on to the fun part – styling! With the right techniques and products, you can create stunning hairstyles that showcase the beauty of your fine locks.

  • Root-lifting spray: I was blessed with not 1 but 2 cowlicks on the back crown portion of my head. It is a challenge to not have it swirl around and form a big bald spot in the back of my head! I spray on some root lifter underneath that section of my hair at the root and rub it in well while my hair is wet, and then blow it dry with a big round brush. I’ve used many types of root lifting spray, but am currently using Tresemme One Step Volume. Look for lightweight sprays or powders that provide lift without weighing your hair down. Apply the product directly to your roots and massage it in for instant lift and body
  • Volumizing Mousse.: The right mousse can be the secret weapon for fine hair! Choose a volumizing mousse that adds body and lift without leaving any sticky residue. (I like this kind and Lange Whip.) Apply a golf ball-sized amount to your roots and distribute it through the lengths of your hair. You’ll be amazed at how this simple step can transform your hair.
  • Round Brushes and Blowouts: Blow drying your hair with a round brush is an excellent technique to add volume and bounce. Invest in a high-quality round brush and master the art of blowouts.
  • Sea Salt Spray: If you want to try the “beachy wave” style and need a little “grit” to help hold the curls, sea salt spray might help.
  • Styling pomade: I absolutley love Oasis fiber gum as my styling pomade. I use a VERY (Very!) tiny little bit, rub it on my finger tips, turn my head upside down and rub it into just the root area of the crown of my head – when I’m styling my hair like a straight bod. It helps add just a bit of volume in the area where I need it. If I have a more “curly” style, I rub in a very little bit and squeeze the hair in my hands to define and place the curls the way I want them to stay.
  • Hair Spray to Hold: Update! I just had a fresh hair cut and learned about an incredible hair spray for fine hair!! Aveda Air Control Light Hold Hair Spray works great as a “net” to hold style from underneath. I lift my hair where I want volume added a spray a bit underneath. Then, I use Tresemme hair spray to hold the “outside” of my hairstyle to “set it”. The two work together so well. They hold without makking my hair feel stiff.

  1. I have baby fine hair and not a lot of it. I am always interested in what others use. I will be trying out these products. I love the Goldwell line. I use the dry wax for a bit of texture. A little goes a long way and I use the hairspray. They are both a little pricey but my hair is short so they last a long time. I purchase them at Ulta in the States. Thanks for sharing!
