I’ve saved my personal favorite for last…

the doorpost sign

I initially was just going to do a gallery wall up the stairway, but once it was finished, the space seemed unbalanced.

I stood back and took a long, hard look.  I thought what it needed was a substantial sign above the doorway into the Dining Room.

In the stash of wood I got from the carpenter shop garbage, I had a few boards left.

They were filthy dirty and already had coats and coats of paint on them.

{Perfect!!}

After cleaning them thoroughly, I went outside and sanded them well with a random orbital sander. I wasn’t sure what kind of paint was on them, so I wanted to sand in a well-ventilated area.

Once sanded, the latex paint adhered well to them.

I alternated painting each board (before assembling it) with aqua blue paint and a wash of white over the already yellow boards.

After the color was dried, I stained the sides and fronts of each one ~ avoiding the inner parts of the boards that were going to be glued together. {Glue sticks best to raw wood.}

{Although I didn’t take pictures of the next step, you can see the process here.}

I glued each board with wood glue and placed a clamp tightly on them to dry overnight.  I also nailed on 3 strapping pieces to make sure it was nice and sturdy.  {It’s quite a large sign.}

As I was working on the assembly of the sign base, I was pondering what I wanted to write on it.

I got to thinking about this passage of Scripture found in Deuteronomy 6:5-9.  It says this:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Since this was going to be a “Doorframe” sign, I wanted it to be something really meaningful to us and our family.

I chose the verse Joshua 24:15.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

{It was done in Book Antique font in the same painting method as outlined here.}

I love that it’s the first thing I notice when I walk in the door…
