Paint the Dining Room…Check!

My mom always said that when you start any project, it always gets worse before it gets better.  I thought of that as my Dining Room looked like this this morning…

starting to paint

I hate having the house all discombobulated, so when I paint, I try to do it quickly.

Oh, my.  This paint job tried my patience.  For whatever reason, it took not one, not two, but THREE!coats of paint to cover these walls.  I thought I could be done by noon.  Silly, silly me…

I don’t know what the deal was.  This 1920’s drywall is a really funny material, though.  It sort of “drinks” the paint!  I squeezed out every drop of that paint, and barely had enough.

I wanted to try to save the words on the wall, so I taped a square around it…{I could say that I carefully measured and marked with a T-square.  That would be lying, though.  I just eyed it…}

Here is the room before I started painting…

And here is painted in Mountain Peak White (a Benjamin Moore color that General Paint mixed for me).

The lighting isn’t very good (since I took this pic at 7 p.m.!)…  There will be better ones to come.

The background around the words was the previous wall color.  I still haven’t decided if I like those words like that.  They might come down after all.  I reserved a little paint just in case…

Now it’s a fresh, clean slate…  I can’t wait to start layering in the fun stuff!

  1. Lovely! I know it was a lot of hard work, but the results are so pretty. Don't you want to just hang out in there now and stare at it!

  2. Hello from a new follower. I love your blog and all the pretty things you do with your home. I do like your dining room too. You did well to persevere and not give up after the second coat!

  3. I wonder if you have plaster… that could explain why it sopped up the paint. Hmmm… Regardless, the soft, warm white you've used is fresh and really brightens the space. You could frame around the words and make them look like a wall hanging 🙂
    Great work!
