An Insider’s Guide for Places to Visit on Vancouver Island, BC
Planning a trip to Vancouver Island, BC? A local’s insider guide to the best places to visit Vancouver Island—from hidden beaches and scenic walks to charming towns and top-notch spas. Includes what to wear and the best time to come!

First, a Little About Me
I’m “Grandma Rita”, and I have lived on Vancouver Island for the past 34 years. I grew up on the prairies of Montana, on a farm surrounded by beautiful blue skies and big fields. I still have to pinch myself when I see both the ocean and mountains now!
Vancouver Island is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with smaller islands surrounding it that can be reached by boat or ferry. We actually lived on one of those small islands for 24 years. Now we’re on the larger Vancouver Island, and over the past 10 years we’ve made it a point to explore more of what’s in our own “backyard”. It seems like there’s a breathtaking view or cozy hidden gem around every corner!
Vancouver Island Is NOT Vancouver, BC! (Cruise to Alaska Tip)
This is a question I get asked a lot—especially from cruise travelers headed to Alaska. If you’re sailing on an Alaska cruise from Vancouver, BC, please know that Vancouver Island is a separate island and not the same place as the city of Vancouver.
To get here from the city of Vancouver, you’ll need to take a ferry ride that’s about 1½ to 2 hours each way. If you don’t plan extra time before or after your cruise, you won’t be able to see Vancouver Island and still make it back to your ship on time. But if you do plan for extra days, it’s absolutely worth the trip!
When’s the Best Time to Visit Vancouver Island?
The best months for sunny, blue skies are typically July and August. That’s when you’ll find the warmest weather—perfect for beach days and outdoor exploring.
That said, the weather here is relatively mild all year long, with wet and gray winters, and the occasional snowfall that usually melts quickly. Even though temperatures rarely dip too low, the humid sea breeze can feel chilly to the bone—especially in winter—so plan accordingly!
What to Pack: West Coast Casual
Locals don’t usually carry umbrellas, but we all own a good raincoat and waterproof shoes. My go-to pair of walking shoes (in all but flip-flop weather!) and what you’ll see on MANY feet around here are Blundstone boots (affliate link).
In the summer, pack:
- Shorts, skirts, capris
- T-shirts and light sweaters
- A swimsuit (yes, we go swimming – However, keep in mind, the ocean is VERY cold here. I prefer lake swimming, personally.)
- Flip-flops or comfortable sandals – or hiking boots/ runners if you’re a serious hiker
- Light rain jacket
Year-round must-haves:
- Layers (think jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters or hoodies). You can peel them off if you get too warm!
- Warm jacket that is at least water resistant if you’re visiting in fall/ winter/ spring
- Comfortable walking shoes
Dress is quite casual around here—“West Coast Casual” is what I like to call it. We’re not big on dressing up, so comfy and practical is the way to go!
Local Favorites: My Personal Recommendations
The following are places I’ve actually been to and loved. There are so many more to discover, but this is a great starting point if you’re looking for (my) real local insight!
1. Victoria, BC
Butchart Gardens is an absolute must-see! The gardens are world-class, beautifully maintained, and their Saturday night summer fireworks are magical. The Christmas displays are also stunning in winter. The whole place runs like clockwork, even with tour buses and big crowds.
Other favorites in Victoria:
- Murchie’s Tea and Coffee
- A leisurely drive on Dallas Road for jaw-dropping ocean views
- Fisherman’s Wharf (don’t miss the colorful float homes!)
- Walk through the Empress Hotel (and they have restaurants, shops, and a tea time in there, too!)
- See the Parliament Buildings lit up at night
- Stroll on the David Foster Walkway
- We have always enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Inner Harbour (It’s right across from the Blue Ball Ferry Terminal to Anacortes, Washington!)
2. Nanaimo, BC
My favorite place to shop on the Island!
- Woodgrove Centre Mall is full of stores I love.
- Nearby you’ll find Chapters/Starbucks, Michaels, and HomeSense.
- The downtown marina area is charming, with lovely water-side restaurants and great walking paths and parks.
3. Tofino & Ucluelet, BC
If you want west coast beach vibes, with waves big enough to surf, this is the place!
- Stunning ocean views and surf-worthy waves
- Cute town with charming shops
- Look for fun spots with lots of food trucks!
4. China Beach – Outside Victoria
A drive outside of Victoria, this beach took my breath away!
- Aqua water, sandy beach, tree-lined trail
- Part of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail
5. McIvor Lake- Campbell River
This beautiful lake is a favorite on a warm day.
- Lovely sand and crystal-clear water
- Great swimming, sunbathing, and family-friendly
6. Spas
Looking for relaxation? Here are my personal picks (they’re definitely a splurge—but wow, what a treat!):
- Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort– Parksville, BC
- Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa– Courtenay, BC
- Eden Street Spa (not oceanfront but still wonderful!)- Campbell River, BC
- Listen to the story of my first spa experience on the podcast here.
7. Englishman River Falls- Parksville, BC
A fantastic spot with beautiful walking trails, shady trees, and river access. We’ve camped here before and loved it. Some even swim in the water! It’s also not far from Coombs, BC which is such a qauinte town to visit.
8. Rathtrevor Beach & Parksville Community Park

13. Local Coffee Shops
If you’re like me and love trying out new cafés, here are some of our favorite cozy spots around the Island: Find our coffee shop recommendations here.
14. Guided Boat Tours/ Whale Watching
Although we’ve never gone on a professional guided boat tour or whale watching excursions, there are many that are offered. Here’s what I pack for a day boat trip.
Where to Eat on Vancouver Island
You’ll find plenty of familiar fast food and chain restaurants scattered across Vancouver Island, including:
- Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, and A&W
- White Spot (a BC favorite for burgers and comfort food)
- Tim Hortons – Canada’s beloved coffee, donut, and sandwich shop
- Domino’s Pizza, Panago Pizza, Boston Pizza
- Ricky’s & Moxie’s
But one of the best parts of exploring the Island is trying the local gems! There are so many charming, family-owned cafés, seafood spots, and farm-to-table restaurants tucked into every corner—from cozy brunch places to ocean-view patios.
🔍 Tip from a Local: For the best local eats, try searching the specific area you’re visiting (like “best coffee shops in Courtenay” or “top seafood restaurants in Tofino”). The options are endless and always changing, so you’re sure to discover something delicious and unique wherever you go!

Thank you very much Rita. Having never been to BC, I very much appreciate the education & my armchair tour. It was fun to see & imagine & perhaps have a chance to visit sometime.
Thank you for this wonderful guide! Your insights on Victoria and Tofino truly resonate with my experiences exploring Vancouver Island. Each place has such unique charm!

We visited Vancouver several years ago. We went to Butchart Gardens and I remember touring a beautiful building, but I don’t remember the name.
