Kaanapali Beach and Hula Pie | Travelling in Hawaii

Our adventures of travelling in Hawaii take us to Kaanapali Beach and tasting Hula Pie for the first time today. Come along and we’ll show you the sites!

Come See Kaanapali Beach and Eat Hula Pie on our Travels in Hawaii Today!

On this particular day, 3 of my long-time dreams came true:

  1. Seeing the ocean in different shades of aqua blue.
  2. Tasting a “frosty (non-alcoholic) drink with an umbrella on the top”.
  3. Walking on a white sandy beach…

Although I started out with visions of writing in a journal each day, that didn’t happen!  But, this happened to be a day that I did write in it.  Here’s what it said:

Saturday, April 13,

“Oh, the time is flying!

As I write this, I’m sitting out on our lanai.  It’s only 8 pm, but pitch black outside.  The pool-side tiki torches are lit, couples are walking by hand in hand, and splashes can be heard by happy people in the pool.  The evening sounds echo against the backdrop of the sound of the rolling, breaking waves on the beach…

Today was “beach day”.  After waking at 5 am and watching the sunrise from our coffee time bench,

we packed up our water bottles and sunscreen and headed out to explore Kaanapali Beach.  We discovered a delightful beach walk path that wound its way around and through a multitude of gorgeous resorts.

The path provided moments of shade, which was a nice break from the heat of the sun.  Although cloudy and overcast [we found out later it was vog], it was still heat that we rarely – if ever- feel at home.  Gentle ocean breezes wafted through with the scent we can only describe as “Hawaii” – sweet and fresh.

When we thought we just might expire from the heat, we arrived at Whaler’s Village.

It was exactly 10:29 a.m. and Leilani’s was just opening.

We decided it was time for a mid-morning coffee time  ~ but this time with frosty drinks (me – a virgin mango daiquiri [Oh, my stars, it was delicious!] and Irwin – a coke) and a piece of Hula Pie.

Apparently, this pie is a Hawaii tradition ~ oreo crust with vanilla macadamia nut ice cream and chocolate sauce.  [Each piece has 1 pint of ice cream in it!!]

After our delightful frosty treats, we headed right on out to the beach.

Ahh…aqua water…

{Well…I guess it was technically tan-colored…Winking smile}

For our mid-afternoon activity, we drove to Lahaina to check out their art under the banyan tree (mostly artists) and walk through the quaint shops.

Since we had had our fill of Costco meat and cheese sandwiches, we decided to beat the supper rush and went to Bubba Gumps in the late afternoon.

It was such a fun restaurant ~ dining with open windows, the beach view outside, and birds flying in!!

The coconut crusted shrimp was amazing…and I loved my mahi mahi sandwich.

We did a little shopping and bought the boys some t-shirts (7 for $20!), and now, after a soak in the hot tub we’re ready for sleep.  {What??  It’s only 8:00??}

*Again, I’m going to show a Family Reel of pictures of this day.  Remember, the rules of a Family Reel are that they are ALL the pictures from the day ~ even the un-edited rejects and the sideways ones…The signs shown at the end of the slideshow are from the Bubba Gump restaurant.  We thought they were hilarious…}

  1. Absolutely delicious—all of it! I would love to smell the smells of ocean, sand, & sun! I think I need to start a beach vacation fund for me & my husband!

  2. We stayed at Kaanapali when we went to Maui – it is georgeous! Did you see the cliff diver while you were at Leilanis? We also ate at Bubba Gumps – fun! I am loving your pictures of your trip, makes me want to go back 🙂
