The One Room Challenge: Picking a Room

As we’ve been gradually fighting our way out of a monstrous sea of moving boxes and getting aquainted with our new townhouse, I decided to work on the specifics of organization and decor one room at a time. I’ve been intrigued for years with the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda of Calling it Home. The premise is that bloggers choose a room in their home to make over and aim to finish it in 6 weeks.

I want to be in!

However, this Fall’s challenge started exactly 6 days after we moved. The idea is to post an update every Thursday, with the final reveal on week 6.

That means I should be on Week 4 this week.

So, since I’ve been working like a crazed maniac on one room already, I’m going to cram all 4 weeks into the next 4 days.

Hold onto your horses, kids.

We’re making over this room!

The Living Room, Dining Room, and Entryway. It’s where we spend the most time, entertain guests, and take our shoes off at the door.

It needs to work hard and be an excellent multi-tasker.

As with every room makeover I’ve done, I want to utilize as many things as I can that I currently own to cut down on budgetary costs.

The Inspiration

Our townhouse was built in the early 90s and has had a few updates ~ like new flooring ~ since then. It’s a great clean slate to work with ~ lovely dry-walled walls, a professional paint job,  & nice wooden-slat blinds.

My goal is to inject interest and personality into the space. For those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I love the farmhouse look with a little beach cottage thrown in.

I’ve found my inspiration (like many others!) from Joanna Gaines and The Fixer Upper. I love a mix of crisp white, black, and pops of greenery.

I also like warm wood tones in a space, and maybe a little soft blue somewhere.

And, so, the Modern Industrial Farmhouse/Townhouse makeover begins.

The To Do List

The to do list is evolving as we speak, but this is where we are so far:

  1. Change out light fixtures.
  2. Paint the bizarre brown racing stripe around the perimeter of the room’s ceiling out.
  3. Paint out the dreadfully dark builder’s beige color.
  4. Add some feature walls of interest in the Dining Room space.
  5. Figure out storage space solutions.
  6. Re-design the entryway closet to function better and have a little style.
  7. Hang up art
  8. Find lighting solutions to brighten up the room during the day and night.
  9. Start shopping for a new couch/ new chairs?  (This may just be a dream…)
  10. New rug?

Come on back tomorrow and we’ll get this party started.
