The Happy Sign {Inspired by the Happy Couch}

Last week, I stumbled on to this image:

Isn’t that just the happiest couch ever?  I especially love those flowers.  {It’s from a Facebook site called Happy Chair.  Even the business name makes me smile!}

I just couldn’t get its cuteness out of my mind.

At the same time, I was doing some much needed cleaning in our house.  In the process, I noticed that the picture that once lived in our upstairs bathroom now resides in the Living Room. Yep, I’m a thief in my own home.

The naked wall with two lone nails just wasn’t real pretty…

So, I decided to try my hand at a “happy flower” with a picture to go with it.

Here’s how it turned out:

happy sign best

I painted the sign (18” x 19”) on a piece of thin plywood we had lying around in the basement.  It even had cute pencil squiggles on it from one of the boys.  Since our youngest is now 13, it has obviously sat un-used for a long time!

The method of painting was the same that I always use:

1.  Print fonts out on computer. {I designed the sign in Photoshop first.}

2.  Basecoat.

3.  Once basecoat is dry, transfer the fonts with graphite paper.

4.  Paint the words.

5.  Add a hanger on the back.

{You can find a tutorial for the above here.}

I looked and looked online for a pattern for a huge fabric flower.  In the end, I just had to wing it and try something original.  {Scary!!}  I’ll show you how I made it tomorrow.

It’s now hanging in its new teeny tiny bathroom home…

But, it also looks mighty good in the entryway.

It just might get stolen …;)

  1. I love it! And to think its the words to one of my favorite songs… its “our” song! Not to be confused with our newest “song” “second hand emotion.” (its actually “I second that Emotion” by Smokey Robinson but I’m lousy at understanding words to songs and have been singing the wrong thing for my entire life!! ha ha!)

  2. Hello! I’m stopping by from Freckled Laundry Textile Party to see your project. Don’t you just love when inspiration strikes, in your case with the pretty sofa in ruffles? I love that you took that inspiration a step further and made a wonderful new piece for your bathroom! Thank you for the inspiration today! When you have a moment, please stop by and say hello.

  3. This song is a lullaby for my 3.5 year old son and this is such a great idea to make this to hang in his room, just because the song means so much to him (and me). Thank you so much for sharing. I love your Blog too… just wonderful! 🙂
