Envelope Pillow Tutorial

These past few days have turned into a Pillow Paloozo party!  We’ve already talked about the Simple Linen Pillow and How to Turn a Grommet Curtain into A Decor Pillow.  Now I’m going to show you a simple envelope pillow.  I’m not exactly sure if that is the correct description for this one…I actually just made it up.Smile

1.  Measure the front of your pillow and add 1/2 inch to each side.  That will become the dimension for the front pillow piece.  I wanted to change mine up a bit, so I sewed a front using three panels of fabric ~ a patterned piece in the middle with two white pieces on each side.  Remember to keep figuring in seam allowances as you design your pillow front.  Always put RIGHT sides together, stitch, and iron seams flat.

2.  Cut a piece of fabric for the back that measures the size of your pillow back + add 1/2 inch to each side.  Hem one end (where you want the flap to come over) by folding down 1 inch, ironing, fold 1 inch again, iron, and stitch. {Or you can do like I did and just use the selvage edge of the fabric.}

3.  Cut a “flap” piece as wide as you  would like it to fold over and hem one  end.

4.  Lay pieces according to picture, pin, and stitch 1/2 inch all the way around {as both pictures above show}.

5.  Trim corners and turn right side out.

6.  Insert pillow form.

7.  Fold flap up and around the end.

  1. I’ve been loving all your pillows this week, Rita! I’m saving the posts – something tells me one or two (or more :D) are going to be part of my picks of the week tomorrow! 🙂 I love the second fabric you’ve added on the sides. It’s such a pretty contrast. Sometimes I’ll ruche the center fabric; have you ever tried it that way?

  2. Love these pillows, thanks so much for the tut. Just found your blog through the feature on Classy Clutter, and I LOOOVE it. It embodies everything I love about decor and blogging, especially with the coastal, beachy theme. Everything is so gorgeous and I cant wait to see whats next. New follower!
