More Handmade Wooden Ornaments

Yesterday I wrote a step by step tutorial on how to make chalkboard-like wooden ornaments. As long as we’re on the subject, I thought I’d also show a few other options  for handmade wooden ornaments.

Both ideas require a pattern being cut out of 1/4 inch baltic birch plywood with a scroll saw.

Wooden Ornament  1: Stenciled Design

This ornament is very similar to the “joy” ornament, however, if you’re not interested in handpainting letters, this might be the option for you! It utilizes a small stencil of a flower ~ just stenciled on using a small amount of paint, with a metallic gold dot center.  You could use any small stencil that you like. I think a snowflake one would be pretty.

Because I painted it in black and white, they have the appearance of being similar to the oh-so-popular chalkboard look.

However, by simply changing the color scheme, you could customize them to fit whatever theme and style you’d like.

Wooden Ornament 2: Snowman Scene

This ornament is obviously more work in the cutting out department! It’s cut in two layers, painted and then glued together.

I enjoy painting these and adding tiny little strips of fabric as a scarf.  And, an easy way to paint falling snow is to dip an old toothbrush in water, wipe off the excess water, and then dip into white acrylic paint. Then gently “rub” over it with you thumb while pointing down at your project~ tada!~ instant snow!
