Have You Ever Noticed How Obsessed People Are with Personality Tests?

There’s the Myers-Briggs. The Enneagram. “360s”. Strengths Finders. And, so, so many more…

Personally? I’ve learned something very important about myself over the years.

I do not enjoy personality tests.

Taking them stresses me out. I read one question and immediately think different scenarios requiring different answers… “Well… it depends.”

• Do I enjoy social settings? Which ones?
• Who’s there?
• How loud is it?
• What do I have to do?

Before long, I’ve answered one question fifteen different ways, and the test is no longer evaluating my personality — just exposing my overthinking.

When the results finally come back? All over the place. I’ve decided my official personality type is: “The woman who does not enjoy personality tests.”

But today? Today is different. Because I’ve created a personality quiz I actually love. (And, no, it’s not “scientific” at all!!!;)

Introducing: The Purse-anality Test.

Why Purses? (Here’s What I Noticed…)

Years ago, I worked at a retail store that sold a line of purses. As women came in to shop, I made two fascinating observations:

1. Purses are a very important accessory for most women.
2. Every single detail matters — the zippered pockets, the size, the strap, the color. Everything!

And what was important to one woman wasn’t necessarily important to the next.

That’s when it hit me: a woman’s purse tells you a lot about who she is.

So whether you’re reading this as a fun thing to do on your own, sharing it with friends, or even using it as a creative object lesson for a Mother’s Day talk at church, I think you’re going to love this.

The Purseanality Test: 3 Purse Personalities

As you read through these, go on a little treasure hunt in your mind. Think of the women in your life — past and present — who might fit each one. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s your mom, your grandmother, your best friend.

👜 Type 1: The Chic Commander

The Small Crossbody Purse

This woman carries the sleek, organized, efficient purse. It’s stylish. It’s practical. It’s hands-free. And right now, the “trendy” thing is to have it strapped to the front of her. Some ladies can pull this off like a cowboy with a shiny belt buckle…

What’s inside her bag?

• Lipstick
• Keys
• Debit card
• Phone
• Possibly one emergency tissue

And somehow… that’s all she needs.

This is the woman who has her life together. Everything has a place. Everything is intentional. She walks through life with calm efficiency, and wants her hands free to move quickly.

What she teaches us:

• Simplicity
• Confidence
• Preparedness
• That you really can survive without carrying 47 mystery receipts

🎒 Type 2: The Rescue Ranger

The Carry-it-All Bag

This purse? This isn’t just a handbag. This is a survival kit.

What’s inside her bag?

• Band-aids
• Snacks
• Flashlight
• Multi-tool
• Tissues, gum, hand sanitizer
• Safety pins and medicine
• Chargers
• Probably a granola bar from 2019

If a natural disaster happens — find this woman. Stand near her. She is prepared. Now listen, you might think a purse ready for any disaster would be large, but the Rescue Ranger’s pocketbook just might be deceptively small or medium sized.

It is probably packed incredibly strategically optimizing every single. little. inch. – complete with color co-ordinating pouches with items packed with precision. And make no mistake. The rescue ranger herself just may be a little bit of a thing – but her purse weighs a TON!!

What she teaches us:

• Security and practical love
• Protection and wisdom
• That “just in case” thinking is actually a love language
• That comfort often looks like preparation

🌸 Type 3: The Magic Maker

The Bottomless Wonder Bag

And then… there is the magical purse. The bottomless wonder. The Mary Poppins handbag.

A child cries? Out comes:

• Stickers
• Fruit snacks
• Tiny toys
• Coloring pages
• Wet wipes
• Crackers
• A fully stocked emotional support system

No one understands how it all fits. But somehow — it does. The magic maker probably loves to tell stories and is a hoot and a half to have coffee with. She’s the one you call when your child needs some odd costume for tomorrow’s dress up day. She’s got it – and she absolutely loves to share her “finds” with you!

What she teaches us:

• Nurturing and creativity
• Laughter is great medicine
• Delightful distractions can simmer down a child’s emotional outburst
• That some of the most meaningful acts of love come with a giggle and sweet snack

The Heart of It All

Here’s what I love most about this little exercise:

No matter what kind of purse a woman has— she carries something meaningful.

Whether she is organized, prepared, nurturing, efficient, practical, gentle, or fun — each woman carries something that has shaped the people around her.

If you take a moment today to look back across your life, you may realize that many women have carried treasures into your world:

• Some gave you wisdom.
• Some gave you comfort.
• Some gave you laughter.
• Some gave you strength.
• Some gave you faith.

Some women carried burdens you never saw — so that you could carry hope.

A Note for Mother’s Day

This Purseanality Test started as a fun object lesson I developed for a Mother’s Day talk at church. I wanted to think of something that connects all women – whether they’re moms or not.

Mother’s Day can hold so many emotions:

• For some, it is joyful.
• For others, it is tender.
• For some, it is filled with grief.
• For others, it is deeply grateful.

Whatever emotion Mother’s Day brings up for you, my prayer is this: that you will remember the women who have loved you. The women who shaped you. The women who carried faith, hope, wisdom, and compassion into your life.

And may we honor them not just by remembering — but by being women who share kindness & love with joyful abandon!
