Unsettling

Aside from the pitter-pat of rain on the roof, and the hum of the washing machine downstairs, the house is eerily quiet as I type. We were up early this morning, talked with our son overseas (did you know you can “call” someone on Facebook??), my husband went to work early, and now I find myself alone with the company of a hot cup of coffee.

Fall Living Room

It dawned on me that exactly one week from today, we’ll be waking up for the first time in our new house. Although it seems we’ve been anticipating this for a long time, now that it’s here,  it’s  surreal. I have a new-found compassion for people whose professions require them to move often.

Unsettling ~ Although moving day is less than a week away, and you're in the process of UNSETTLING, it's nice to have one room of the house pretty and in order. Here is a Fall living room all ready to be packed up for it's big debute in a new house!

My, is it ever hard on the heart! ~

  • The packing and unpacking;
  •  the sorting, purging, & strolling down memory lane;
  •  the falling in love with a home and neighborhood & settling all in…

And then unsettling and starting the process all over again!

Ready or not, we’re at the unsettling stage.

Our landlord came for a visit yesterday. I found it to be the best motivation of all. There’s nothing quite like wanting your damage deposit back to get youself whipped into high gear!;)

I packed boxes, vacuumed floors, scrubbed walls, and wiped down shelves.

Once I got started, things seem to go quite quickly.

Meanwhile, my husband got on the phone and arranged other essential things ~ like the moving truck, transfer of phone & utilities, and a million and one other paperwork items.

I find I’m much more relaxed this time around. Although I’m trying to be as organized as I can be, I understand that moving is a chaotic event, and I need to roll with whatever comes…

So, as the boxes are filled and stacked and labelled, we’re leaving one precious spot in the house unchanged until the day before we move ~

The living room.

It’s all clean and fluffed and rearranged and ready for its big debute in a new house.

Somehow, having one place remain the same helps make “unsettling” a little easier on the heart.:)

  1. How smart of you! I am in the midst of moving and I wish I had one room that does not feel so upended. Boxes are everywhere, stacked as high as I can get them. It IS unsettling and I am so ready to get this thing done. May your move go smoothly and everything make it to your new home unscathed!

  2. What a good idea! It won’t take long at all to pack it up for the move. We were married for 10 years before we bought our house and we’ve been in it for 23 years now. We moved 10 times during those first 10 years of marriage. There were so many things that I wish I had saved during those early years, but when you move so much you just pare down…of course we’ve accumulated far too much since settling for so long in one place. LOL. Now that our family is grown, we are mulling over whether or not we should stay or find a smaller home – this one seems too big – except when everyone is home to visit. I’m praying that your move goes well.
