The Great Escape

I had a favourite song when I was a little girl.

“Why is that song your favourite?”, my mom asked.

“I don’t know,” I replied, “It just is.”

As the words flashed on the screen this morning at church, I realized years of experience have given me better insight as to why this song is still on my favourites list.

“…He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock…”

A scene from years past flitted through my mind.  Thankfully, the details of the situation have faded with time, but I recall I was going through an extremely difficult, tumultuous situation.  I felt like I was drowning.  I wanted to run away –anywhere! – to try to find some relief from the pressures weighing in on me.  I expressed this to my dear friend Donna who had joined me in my living room for a cup of coffee.

“Oh, Honey,” she exclaimed, “You can run away…and you should!”

(“WHAT?”, I was thinking…)

“You just run right to Jesus, crawl up into His lap, and let Him shelter you under His beautiful wings…”

Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…

Oh, those were incredible words of comfort that day.  Although the stressful situation didn’t just magically disappear, the frantic anxiety in my heart lessoned.  I realized I did have a safe place to go.  A place of refuge and refreshment.  A place that I was loved – by the One who cares about every single detail of my life.

I often hear people say, “I just need to get away.”  I totally agree that sometimes a break from the everyday routine is a very good strategy for getting new perspective on things.  Advertisements tell us “The Great Escape” includes palm trees, white sand, turquoise water, and maybe even a shiny, white cruise ship.

I’m not gonna lie…I’m dreaming of that someday, too!Smile

However, I’ve also realized that a change of scenery doesn’t take away our troubles.  As the saying goes:  Wherever we go, there we are!

The beauty of having Jesus as my “Great Escape” is that He welcomes me with open arms.  And there – and only there – do I find true peace, true joy, true comfort, and true love.

And I can escape “there” anytime –whether I’m surrounded by palm trees or not!

He Hideth My Soul (by Frances J. Crosby)

A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
A wonderful Savior to me;
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
Where rivers of pleasure I see.

  • Refrain:
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
    That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.

A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
He taketh my burden away,
He holdeth me up and I shall not be moved,
He giveth me strength as my day.

With numberless blessings each moment He crowns,
And filled with His fullness divine,
I sing in my rapture, oh, glory to God!
For such a Redeemer as mine.

When clothed with His brightness transported I rise
To meet Him in clouds of the sky,
His perfect salvation, His wonderful love,
I’ll shout with the millions on high.

May you find rest and peace in the comfort of His mighty hand today…

    Blessings to you…
