A Sunny Day Craft~{Day 10}

Happy Monday to you all…and Happy Thanksgiving to you Canadians! Today begins Week 2 of our 31 Days series, and around here we’ll be working on some wooden plank signs.

Painting signs is definitely one of my favourite crafts. The signs we’ll be making this week all feature wood planks. There are different ways that you can obtain planks. The most obvious way is to go to your local building center and purchase boards and cut them into whatever sizes you choose.

The other way ~ which is what I did ~ is to see if your local building center or woodworking shops have piles of “scrap wood”. It is a nuisance to them, and they seem thrilled to see it being put to good use. So, in reality, our projects are “reclaimed” {or “rescued”?} plank projects!

Once I got all my planks, I sanded them and stained them with one coat of Minwax’s Early American oil-based stain. If you want your wood to be darker, you can put on more coats.

Today’s project featured an odd sized plank that measured 7 1/4 x 12 inches. We have a lot of gray days around here, and I’ve been wanting to do a “Sunshiney” kind of picture. Using the basic steps outlined in the basic decorative painting tutorial from last week, this is how it turned out…

I had so much fun painting it that I think I’d like to do another one…perhaps even bigger…

The fonts used were Eccentric Std. (for “I’ve Got Sun Shine”) and Fashion Victim (for “on a cloudy day).
