Heading Home

I’m typing this post on my iPad as I sit on the Atlanta, Georgia airport runway waiting to taxi off. We’re at the stage in the process where people are wandering down the aisle jostling bags and belongings and searching desperately for space in the overhead compartments for their carry on bags. Soon the flight attendants will walk through and snap down all the compartments, and with a few more dinging chimes and announcements, we’ll start down the runway and get this big bird in the air.

It’s been an eventful 10 days away, and now we’re starting the journey home.

My husband has been taking a leadership course for the past 14 months. This last learning residential was in Georgia, and we spouses were invited to come for part of it and a graduation celebration. The airline had a challenge finding us dates to get us home (using points), so we had a few days to travel around Georgia while we waited.

We squeezed a lot into the last week and a half. We’ve traveled by planes, trains, and automobiles;

Visited, learned, celebrated,and went away inspired at a beautiful retreat center that was once a dairy farm;

Tried Southern home cookin’ – shrimp and grits, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, catfish, and fried okra. We even dined at Paula Deen’s restaurant! I found it all quite fine, but the one food thing I enjoyed most was Georgia pecan pie…

We wandered through the beautiful streets in Savannah and marveled at the beautiful corbels and brick and cobblestones.

We sat on the famous Forest Gump bench, sipped coffee, and listened to the clip-clop of horses  on the street.

We didn’t really plan our trip down to every jot and tiddle before we left, but just did what seemed right at the time.

A serendipitous discovery was that we were right in the neighborhood of a place I’ve always dreamed of visiting (thanks to Layla at the Lettered Cottage), so a short drive took us to the beach at Tybee Island. Although a bit windy and cool, it was a definite highlight of our time.

I leave feeling so blessed for the chance to visit an area I’ve never seen before…and looking forward to hugging my boys’ necks soon, and unpacking some more boxes.

It’s been a whirlwind of a month.

It’s nice to be heading home.

(*Update: We’re home!! In between doing laundry, cleaning, and unpacking boxes, I’m going to write about all our recent adventures…Stay tuned!;))
