How to Turn What You Already Have into the Best Fall Decor Ideas Ever

Update September 2020

I was perusing through some old posts today on the blog and came across this one on Fall decor ideas from years ago. It made me smile.

In this day and age, it’s easy to be caught in the comparison trap and feel our home isn’t good enough.

Compared to all the popular instagrammers, you just might feel your Fall home decor doesn’t measure up and your pumpkins aren’t hip & trendy.;)

But, I’m here to tell you, just be you! Your decor tells your own story. Embrace it. It’s beautiful…

Fall Decor Ideas Using What You Already Have

Embrace your old furniture – even if it is a bit outdated…

Our homes are like us, aren’t they?

Unique.  No two are alike.  Each  is filled with its own story.

My couch reminded me of that today.

The poor thing is old, outdated, and dirty.

I remember how thrilled I was the day we brought it home all brand new from the auction (in the 90s!).  It was exactly what I wanted and it fit perfectly in our blue and dusty rose living room.

The truth is, I still love it.  It’s just the right size for a cozy afternoon nap, and for now I decided not to try to cover up its outdated blue-checkedness with a blanket, but just embrace the look that it is.

Styling a bookcase can be done using items you already have

The decor in the bookcase is nothing new or trendy either. In fact, the items I reached for, I’ve reached for many times before.  Each one is special to me for a different reason.  Sometimes the look of it just seems “pretty” to me.

Old books piled up, branches cut from our yard, a book page paper bunting garland , and china cups from the kitchen seem like perfect Fall decor ideas.

Other times, items remind me of the precious people God placed in my life to teach and bless me in unmeasurable ways.

The little low-backed chairs were my first attempt with slip-covers. They definitely do exactly what they say ~ “slip”!  I’m forever adjusting and straightening them out…But, oh, how I love those chairs.  They used to sit in my grandparent’s farmhouse living room.

This Fall, I reached for neutral decor items with lots of texture.

Whites and creams and browns.

Soft and smooth, rough and rugged, tall and short.

It somehow feels warm and cozy and ready for nights by the crackling wood stove…

  1. That is so good Rita. It is so easy to fall into comparison. When we were first married (and before Social media), everything we owned “furniture-wise” was given to us. Those old brown floral couches that were popular who knows when, tables, etc. but you know. I loved my home, because it was mine. IF I’m honest, I don’t know if I’d feel the same way or if I”d feel like I was lacking. I have a lot of my moms holiday decor (she passed away 16 eyars ago) and I love that what I have belonged to her. It’s now getting old and needing to be replenished but it has memories. It’s so important to fill our homes with things we love rather than just what’s on trend or what some influencers tells us is popular.

  2. You are full of wisdom and joy Rita and I thoroughly enjoy your posts and eye for beauty! May His favor be upon you and your family.
