Learn Something New {Blogging Resources}

Soon after my mom was diagnosed with dementia (I write about that here and here ), I read that one of the ways to combat the onset of dementia was to exercise your brain by always learning something new.

I decided to get right on that…

I started searching for things that might be of interest to me and around the same time stumbled on some beautiful, inspiring home decor blogs.

Honestly, I didn’t even know what a blog was until then!  Soon after, thanks to the coercion encouragement of my friend Kim (Thanks, Kim!), I started one of my own.

I fell in love with blogging and decided quickly that it would be my “learn something new” thing.

Not only has blogging encouraged me to do more creative things (and actually finish projects!), but I’ve discovered a joy in learning about many other things ~ like graphic and blog design ~ along with “techy” things that I’d never even heard of before!

At the beginning, I literally googled every little question I had and searched for tutorials until I could figure something out.  Then I switched my Blogger blog over to WordPress using an E-book (you can read about that giant learning curve experience for me here and here).

Now, I’m constantly on the look-out for courses or posts that can help me learn some more.  Here are a list of some of my favorites (most of them aren’t free,  but keep a lookout for sales from time to time).

1.  Shoot Fly Shoot’s Photography 101 and 201.  I’ve recommended this highly before.  One of the things that grabs people’s attention in blogs is pictures.  I want to learn to take good ones!

2.  Shoot Fly Shoot’s Room Makeovers with Photoshop.  I purchased this when it was half price, and yet I haven’t had a chance to really do it yet…but I’ve loved what I’ve watched so far.

3.  Emily’s Simplified Graphic Design.

I LOVED this and watched and practiced each lesson.  If you are interested in graphic design and just don’t have a clue how to start using Illustrator, this is where to go.  I found it was a HUGE time saver to have all the topics I wanted to learn about in one handy dandy course.  Looking for specific tutorials for a specific issue can be incredibly time consuming.

4.  Debi’s “Improve Your Blog in 10 Minutes a Day” 31 Day series is what I’m taking right now, and I’m loving it!

If you’re interested, hurry on over to Debie’s blog now and get the details, because come November 1st, it will become an e-book that you’ll need to pay for.

Like I said earlier, you can usually find free tutorials on things you’re looking for, but sometimes it’s nice to just take a “class”.

  1. Great post. I also love blogging for learning something new every day. There are writing and photography skills by the millions to learn and I have just scratched the surface. Thanks so much for the visit and I appreciate your gracious comments and stopping by. I host a weekly linky party called Inspire Me Tuesday. It goes live every Monday evening and I would love for you to link up your latest posts and projects. Anything goes. Marty
