Celebrating, Dreaming, & Painting

celebrating

If you were to walk in my front door right now, we’d high 5 and do a happy dance.

We made it through another summer!  We’re used to this season, but this year, it’s an even bigger celebration.  Never in my wildest imaginations would I EVER have thought I’d be cooking for those busy months.  But, somehow, miraculously, we made it through.  Hallelujah…

dreaming

Ever since I started this little blog, I’ve had a dream.  I always thought it was slightly silly and would never actually happen ~ but I liked to think about it, and joked with others about it.

Then it happened.

About a week and a half ago.

Benjamin Moore called.

Well, not literally, but in a round about way.

I was e-mailed and asked if I’d like to take part in a room transformation opportunity.

My heart raced and I squealed and I nearly broke my fingers trying to type “YES!” fast enough.

It was my dream come true.

The timing, however, was terrible.

I still had a week left of cooking for 207 people, and the transformation needed to happen FAST!

Thankfully, my husband is well used to these crazy projects of mine and was 100 percent behind my dream.  So, he’s been right along side me as we’ve simultaneously taken care of our camp duties and worked on this room project.

So, in contrast to my sporadic blogging as of late, I’m going to take you on our little room transformation journey.  I’m hoping to have a posts up more frequently these days, so grab your morning coffees and come along!  Today, we’ll start at the beginning:

painting

As I mentioned in last week’s post, I love using paint to drastically change a room’s look and feel.  We’ve done it lots and lots, so today I thought I’d give you 5 of my favorite tips for preparing a room for painting.

1.  Empty the room

You could also opt to put all the furniture in the middle of the room and cover it, like we were considering when this picture was taken.  But, in the end, we just moved everything out that we possibly could.  (The table stayed, since it was too wide to fit through the door.)

2.  Cover the floors.

Clean up is so, so much easier if you take the time to cover the floors first.  I used drop cloths as well as old- non-precious throw rugs to cover the entire surface.  It makes everything go much quicker when you aren’t worrying about every little spatter and drop.

3.  Remove all light switch covers, curtain rod holders,  & picture hangers, and put them into a tray or container.  If you put them all in one spot, you won’t be wandering all over the house at the end of the process wondering where that lost cover is!

4.  Use painter’s tape if you have exact edging work to do.

I don’t use painter’s tape in the basic painting of a room, but if you are uncertain about edging lines, this is the way to go.

5.  Make sure you have all the proper tools.  There are certain things that I always need when I’m painting a room.  They are:  a light-weight step ladder, damp rags to wipe up spills, a paint roller tray & liner, roller handle and extension rod, roller, and good paint brush.

Right now, Benjamin Moore has a great promotion on a kit that has most of those supplies in it for you.  We were able to try it out ourselves, and must say that their roller handle and brush are the best we’ve ever used!  (And, I’m really picky about my brushes!)

If you’re interested in giving one of your rooms a fresh start for Fall, you can get some inspiration ideas and more painting tips at the Benjamin Moore website here.  (Along with the details on their promotion!)

See you tomorrow and we’ll get this painting party started!
