How To Paint Rustic Signs with Step-by-Step Video Tutorials

I’ve been watching and enjoying other bloggers’ video tutorials.  Now that I’ve spent some time trying to figure out how to make them myself, I just don’t know how they make it look so easy!  Anyway, here is my first attempt at “vlogging”.  I apologize that these videos are sort of dark.  I need to figure out how to correct that.

This tutorial walks you through the steps of how to make rustic signs.  I’ve broken it down into short little videos, so you can watch the ones that apply to what you want to learn.  And it’s ok.  You can laugh if you want.  I’ve been doing a lot of that all day long!!

rustic sign with words

Step 1:  Prep the wood piece by staining it with oil base stain:

Step 2:  Base coat the sign

Step 3:  Transfer the design from paper to wood using graphite paper:

Step 4:  Paint the large letters:

Step 5:  Paint the small script letters:

Although I do have video footage of the last two steps, little did I know how long it would take to download all these little videos!  So, I’ll just tell you instead:

Step 6:  Using a fine grit sanding block, sand the whole sign until it reveals the wood grain (where you put the Vaseline in Step 1.)

Step 7:  Using a stencil brush, rub a thin layer of clear paste wax over the whole front of the sign.  Let dry and buff with a soft cloth.  It will bring out depth of color and  seal the surface.

That’s it!  Happy painting.

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them.
