31 Ways to Make Home Uniquely You

5 years ago last month we moved into the charming old house {by the sea!} that we’re currently living in.

I was excited at the thought of “quickly” doing a few  things to make it feel like home. I had, after all, discovered I absolutely loved the whole “home-making” thing.

But, then, something strange happened.

I got stuck ~ big time.

Instead of “quickly” painting, sprucing, fixing, and fluffing, I found myself unable to make ANY decision decor-wise. I was overwhelmed, insecure, and terrified that I would somehow do something wrong.  I had started down the slippery slope of comparing myself (and our house) to others’, and  couldn’t even decide what was “me” any more.

Have you ever been there?

The good news is, I eventually became unstuck, and have since been loving the journey of creating a  home that is uniquely us.

I made some delightful discoveries along the way.  Sometimes making a space feel like home means only doing simple little things ~ like putting a few fresh flowers in a vase on the shelf or rearranging the furniture.  Other things ~ like changing a room’s paint color ~ seem a little more challenging, but now I know it doesn’t need to be scary!!  Most importantly, I discovered the joy of embracing “unique”.  No decor police are going to come knocking on my door to tell me something is wrong.  {Hallelujah!}

I’ve decided to join the Nester and other bloggers in a 31 Day blogging challenge.  For the rest of this month, I’d like to share some of the ways I’ve learned to make our house feel more like home.  I’m hoping to include practical tips, helpful resources, diy projects, and even introduce you to some of the people who’ve inspired me in my own journey.

I’d be absolutely thrilled if you joined me each day or even every once in a while.  Feel free to comment below (like all bloggers,  I , too,  LOVE to hear from you!) or ask any questions you may have.  I’m also on Facebook, TwitterPinterest, and Linky Followers  if that helps in any way.

Happy {Unique} Homemaking, here we come!

  1. OH Rita Joy, more and more I am discovering how much we have in come. You see we have moved a bit over the years, not a ton but still… enough. This time I am finding it so hard to make our house truly feel like home. Each house we have lived in over the years has had its own personality but this house (our 7th home in 22 years) really has me stumped. Maybe its because our boys are older now, maybe its because there is no sense of permanency here, and maybe some of it is so many events have occurred in our lives since moving here that I am just overwhelmed. So for now I look forward to your posts during the course of the next month…
    Take care now,
    Peggy

  2. Ohhhh I’m looking forward to this! You NAILED exactly how I have felt ever since we moved “back to the farm.” Today I bought myself a mug because it was TOO perfect. It says, “I dreamed my WHOLE house was clean.” Maybe some of your ideas will help me get unstuck!

  3. I’m looking forward to your 31 day series! I thought about doing a 31 day series in October, but just have to many things going on in the month of October. Our church is going through a major transition, which is taking a lot of time and work for my husband and myself. Maybe next year I can participate. I love what you’ve done to your bedroom. It looks so much brighter and cozy. You’ve captured the beach cottage look so well 🙂

  4. Hi Rita Joy – I started following you last year when you did the 31 day challenge, but have been away from the blogosphere (is that a word?) for a while. I’m back and am looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us this year, since we just moved into a rental house and I’m in “stuck”! I’ve lived in 8 houses in the last 13 years but this is the only rental. I’m just not sure what direction to go and after just two months I’m tired of having a “house” and not a “home”

they’re highly persistent in the environment, and when

  8. An oսtstanding share! I’ve just forաarded this onto a colleague who
had been doing a little homeworк on this. And
he actually bought me dinner because I stumbled upon it for
him… lol. So allow me to reword this…. Thank YOU for
the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending time to
discuss this issue here оn yoսr web site.
