Mom and Daughter Differences

There’s rarely a day that goes by that I don’t think of my mom in some way.  As I’ve been working on my kitchen these past few days, I’ve thought of her so much.  I guess we’ve had many “kitchen related” conversations in the past!

As I chose to remove my upper cupboard doors (and not put them back on!), I remember a conversation she and I had many years ago (when we lived in a previous house):

“Oh, Rita!  Don’t tell me you threw out those doors!  In a week, you’re going to want to put them back on!”

We laughed and laughed over that one.  I did not throw out the doors…but I also didn’t put them back on again.  I LOVE the open cupboard thing…  I guess she and I were different that way.

I also thought of her yesterday as I hung up  new curtains in the kitchen.  I scored this hunk of fabric at Ikea in the AS IS department last fall.

Do you see the price there?…Yep, 6 buck-a-roos!  I thought it would make a great tablecloth.  However, it was huge!  (I’m still unsure as to its original purpose…) I decided to convert whatever it was into curtains.

As I got out the sewing machine, I began comparing my sewing skills to Mom’s.  She was a great seamstress.  She sewed us many clothes over the years…but never sewed curtains for her own house.  I never sew clothes…only curtains!

“Oh, curtains look awful if the seams aren’t perfectly straight!”, she would say.  Obviously, we’re different in that way, too.  I sew on a whim and a prayer…  She sewed things the right way…

Mom liked to order “drapes” (as she called them) from the JCPenney catalogue.  I remembered how the UPS man dropped off the anticipated package one day and I helped her hang them up.  She showed me this little trick:

“You’ve got to train the fabric to hang right,” she said.  Hmmm… I wonder if that helps to distract from the not- so-perfectly- straight seams??Smile

  1. Seems like there's rarely a moment that goes by lately that I don't think about my Mom. I am so grateful to know I'm not the only one. I am amazed as I realize how many things I do because my Mom did…
