Lop-sided

For the past 4 years, my husband has had to travel for about 3 weeks in the month of January. It’s part of his new job, and each year I try to adjust to this part of it. The first year was the worst. This year seemed to go by quite fast. It helped that I went with him for the first 5 days . (Remember how cold it was in Alberta then?). It also helped that I completely lost track of 3 days due to the affects of the stomach flu! I also planned fun things to look forward to – like coffee times with girlfriends and leisurly window shopping trips.

Gratefully, he is back from his big trip. But, now he’s gone again for 4 days. This time he took his favorite pillow.

As I made the bed this morning, I pondered how it looked when I was finished. Without that pillow, the whole bed looks lopsided.

Lopsided…hmm…that’s an interesting term – “Kitty-wumpus”, “off-kilter”, and just plain “out of sync”. That’s sort of how I feel when he’s away.

You know, we sort of get into a routine that becomes “normal” and I take it for granted.

When he’s away I don’t get up each morning to the smell of fresh coffee, a cheerful fire, and a dishwasher that is “miraculously” cleaned out. (Can you tell I’m not an early riser??) But more than just the special every day things he does for me, I just miss having who he is even more. The times of just talking and working through life issues each day… and chatting over a cup of coffee. I’ve discovered that drinking coffee alone isn’t nearly as fun!

So, I guess I’m saying that I agree with the old saying, “distance makes the heart grow fonder”… and it sure makes me realize what a precious gift my husband is to me.

Thankfully, it’s just 3 more sleeps til he gets back home.

Hallelujah for that. I’m tired of wearing socks to bed!:)

(P.S. I wrote this last week, and I’m thrilled to report he is safe and sound back at home. My feet are warm again. AND, he’s taking me out for an early Valentine’s dinner tonight. Woo Hoo!)
