Photography Challenge 1- Bokeh

As I mentioned earlier, I’m determined to figure out how to use my new camera…on settings other than “automatic”! So, during these lazy days of Christmas holidays, I’ve been reading and studying different “how to” photography blogs. I wish I could say I have it all figured out…but alas, that is not the case. I like to think I have somewhat average intelligence, but when the terms shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and f-stop are all flying at me – my brain turns to mush!

I found a nice series on “31 Days to a Better Picture” here. Since the author wrote it in October, I’m working through the series in fast forward. I did the first 5 days while the weather here was West Coast dreadful. The lighting seemed like dusk all day and it was complete with gray sky, pouring rain, and wind. So, I did my “test shots” standing at an open window! Needless to say, none of them were keepers…:)

I did get bored with all the technical stuff, (of course that’s why I’ve never figured it out!) and I skipped ahead through her blog site. Lo and behold, I found the coolest technique called “bokeh” – where the object in the forefront is in focus, and the little lights behind are blurred into little circular orbs. I loved it! So, I decided that would be my first photography challenge. (If you are interested in trying it yourself, the tutorial is here.)

It turned out to be a hilarious experience. My oldest son is big into photography, and my husband is mildly interested too. So here we were – the three of us – each armed with a camera. At 11:30 at night! Going through the house trying to get a good “bokeh” picture. None of us knew how to pronounce that crazy word, so Brad started calling it the “mad cow thing”!

Anyway, it was a fun time, and the next day, I finally got my “holiday bokeh” picture.

Turns out, DAYLIGHT is a big part of the equation!:)
